Sorry guys.  I know it’s been beat up the famous folk day here at Blog de KingShamusHatesCelebrities.com, but whatever.  They have it coming for riding Roman Polanski’s rod for the last few days.

In any event, the good folks over at BigHollywood present this gem.

Anne Applebaum: Super cool about Polanski drugging & raping a teenager.

I’m assuming she’d have a problem if it was her own kids, of course.  Ed Morrissey notes Applebaum’s wacky nonsense: 

Yesterday, I just considered Anne Applebaum to have a conflict of interest over Roman Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland.  After her response to criticism for failing to disclose her husband’s efforts to get charges dropped against the director, it seems clear that Applebaum has lost whatever sense she formerly had — and that her readers are overwhelmingly repulsed by it.  In responding to Patterico, Applebaum scoffs at the notion that the 13-year-old girl had been victimized — because she called her mother before the attack.

In Applebaum’s universe, if her husband is trying to get a fugitive child rapist off the hook, it’s not really rape.  Maybe she’s going with the Whoopi Goldberg defense: “Well, Polanski’s crimes aren’t rape-rape.”

At this point, Applebaum’s conflict of interest isn’t really shocking or even that important.  What is important is that for Asanine Annie, she’s so bought into Polanski’s ‘innocence’ that she thinks a phone call from the girl to her mother before the sexxxy time (and before being drugged) with an underage girl makes it all good.

I guess we have to play it this way.  If Applebaum had a teenage daughter, would she want Roman Polanski to drug, rape and sodomize her underage kid?  If no, how come it’s okay for Polanski to brutalize somebody else’s daughter?  If yes, what makes Roman Polanski’s schlong so great that Anne Applebaum would be alright with this fugitive rapist to use it on her daughter?

One more thing.  I keep hearing how we should let Polanski skate because it’s an old crime and the victim has forgiven her attacker.  That simply doesn’t make any sense.  Sure, the rape occured in the 70′s.  Lot’s of things happened back then that we don’t ignore.  The statute of limitations exists for a reason.  Further, Polanski didn’t just drug and sexually molest a young girl.  He then ran from US law and hid from the reach of American justice for over thirty years.  I understand prosecutorial discretion, but in this case it would send a dangerous precedent to just let the dude skate. 

The fact that the girl forgave Polanski forgave Polanski means nothing.  The fact is, the guy committed a felony and ran away from justice.  Polanski has to be punished.  Enough of the moral retards covering for a fugitive kid rapist.

DVD Review: State of Play

When “State of Play” had its run in the theaters, I stayed away for a variety of reasons.  Some of the reviews were frosty.  Also, it looked like a remake of “All the King’s Men”, with Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams as a post-modern Woodward and Bernstein. 

Let’s skip ahead a tick.  Yes, it’s a press movie, with intrepid reporters digging in the dirt.  Yes, it’s set in Washington DC, so there are corrupt politicians and even more corrupt corporations.  Yes, Ben Affleck has a leading role.  See where I’m going here?

The individual performances are by and large solid.  Crowe does a nice job of portraying Cal McAffrey, a veteran reporter trying to dig up the real story on a shooting and a suicide.   The role also allows him to be a chubby slob throughout the movie, which I think isn’t far away from his off-camera self.  Rachel McAdams, as Della Frye, is a doe-eyed blogger that competes with McAffrey on the story.  She’s cute and feisty and she puts her character through her paces in a part that’s been played a zillion times.

Even the supporting actors put in servicable work.  Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn (Is she still married to Sean?  If so, is she retarded?) and Jeff Daniels do well with the relatively small roles given to them.  Particularly good is Jason Bateman, who chews up the scenery with near Shatner-like brilliance.

Two big problems.  1:  Ben Affleck.  He’s really not a strong actor at all.  Dude is just not up to the challenge of carrying his 1/3 of the movie.  Why producers still see this guy as a leading or semi-leading man is a mystery too deep for this writer to contemplate on a weekday. 

2:  The story is a Hollywood cliche-fest.  Big multinational companies in bed with government are trying to usurp the Constitution, remake America and assault civil liberties with the help of several bought and paid for politicians.  Who are the only people who can stop all that horrible stuff from happening?  Two journalists at a big city mainstream media newspaper.  No, this film is not a comedy.

In the real world, the dinosaur media gets pwned on a regular basis by Andrew Breitbart, Fox News and the blogosphere.  But “State of Play” doesn’t exist in our dimension.  Instead, it’s set in a lefty fantasy land, where only hard-nosed reporters are capable of bringing down the massive Reich wing wheels-within-wheels conspiracies that surround us here in the US of KKKA.

For good measure, the flick throws in a few more hackneyed Hollywood chestnuts just in case we haven’t figured out who we’re supposed to root for.  The big bad corporation is of course a stand-in for Blackwater.  Jeff Daniels’ character, the old slimy politician, is naturally a southern Bible-thumper.  One of the bad guys just happens to be an unstable military veteran.  After a while, the piling on of leftist pieties buries the movie in a heap of unrealistic crapola.

If you’ve got a night to kill and you’re a big Russell Crowe or Rachel McAdams fan, you might enjoy the movie.  If all you care about is seeing a couple of pro actors do their thing in a rinky-dink film, perhaps the flick won’t bore you to tears.  Those viewers who don’t want to get bogged down in liberal tripe and cliched Hollywood plots straight out of 1970′s might want to just re-watch “Gladiator” or “Wedding Crashers” instead.

Meanwhile, over in Lefty-Land…

Every once in a while I go over to the liberal sites.  Most of it is just opposition research.  I don’t expect to learn much, but at least I know how the bed-wetters are formulating their opinions and thoughts and what-not.  Then sometimes you find hilarity.

In a recent post over at the DemocratUnderground, ElsewheresDaughter wrestles with a brainwave, and comes up empty.

We constantly are seeing polling down from the major news services that follow President Obama’s approval ratings and it is an important stat to keep track of, but can you tell me what the media is not covering? How low the Republicans have been polling ever since they became the party of “Waterloo.”

The Democratic leaders do have terrible polling numbers, Nancy Pelosi has a 34% approval rating in DKOS’s new poll and Harry Reid has a 31% approval rating, but let’s take a look at the Republican leadership, shall we?

Mitch McConnell is polling at an 18% approval rating. That’s eighteen percent. John Boehner is polling at 12% approval rating. Just think about that one. And it doesn’t take much to make him cry. Mitch and Boehner are viewed less favorably than Dick Cheney was during the dark days of the Bush administration. Why don’t we hear about that on teevee?

The overall approval ratings of Congressional Republicans is 17% as a party! The Dems are taking their lumps over this chaotic time, but nowhere near the kinds of wounds the GOP are suffering. The media make it appear that all these teabaggers are rallying around the RNC and the country just loves the Beltway elites’ favorite party, but that’s not true at all.

Let’s see if we hear any of this on the Sunday talk Shows. But I won’t hold my breath.

Wow.  Where to start?

The post refers to a Daily Kos poll.  Shock of shocks, a poll commissioned by Markos Moulitsas’ outfit finds Democrats in better shape than the GOP.   

Lets compare the DKos poll to something a little closer to reality, such as Rasmussen’s methodology.  The Kossack research polls all adults, whereas Rasmussen polls likely voters.  So sure, the leftists are looking at everybody.  The problem is that not everybody votes, so getting everybody’s opinion is sorta pointless from an electoral perspective.

Look at the favorability ratings for a couple of the congress-critters.  In the Kos poll, Speaker Pelosi’s favorable/unfavorables are 34/57, Senator Harry Reid’s are 31/57.   Rasmussen puts Pelosi and Reid at 34/57 and 27/49, respectively.  So, the Dkos is close-ish when looking at the Donkey-Punchers.

John Boehner and Mitch McConnell get short-sheeted by Kos, though.  There, we see Boehner at 12/63 and McConnell at 18/64.  Compare those numbers to Rasmussen,where Boenher stands at 21/41 and McConnell’s number are 25/34.

Basically, Kos vastly overstates the amount of rancor felt towards the GOP.  Why would he do this?  The answer is as obvious as Kos’ dementia.

The goofy polling data leads ElsewheresDaughter into some lame conclusions, the most important being that the Democrats are not in trouble.  It’s weird looking around the DU website because it’s almost as if the Donkey-Punchers don’t control both houses of Congress.  This haziness makes it seem like Pelosi and Reid’s unfavorables  are just part of the overall hatred the public feels towards Congress. 

It may be that people feel strong dislike towards all of the legislative branch, but unlike the DU’s selective blindness, it’s pretty clear that Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the Democrats are running the show in Congress.  The fact that the Donkey Punchers own the leadership positions means that it is they-and not the Republicans-that are on the hook for the last 9 months.

People can be plenty annoyed at the congressional GOP, but the fact is they don’t have any power.  They’re badly outnumbered in the House and the Senate has a near filibuster-proof majority for the Democrats.  At this point, the Republican numbers don’t mean hardly anything compared to the Democrats’ polling.

2010 is shaping up as a referendum on Barack Obama and the Democrats.  If the economy continues to shit the bed and the world keeps crashing in on Barry’s ‘Grow The Government’ spend-o-fest, the Democrats are in for a rough mid-term election.  This means that ElsewheresDaughter and the rest of the Democrat rank-and-file are grasping at non-existent straws when looking at uber-shaky GOP unfavorability numbers.

So much for the reality-based community.

Strange visitor from another (retarded) planet

But is he Superman? Well, again, sort of. As any fan of Superman knows, Superman has a doppelgänger on that strange planet known as Bizarro World:

In the Bizarro world of “Htrae” (”Earth” spelled backwards), society is ruled by the Bizarro Code which states “Us do opposite of all Earthly things! Us hate beauty! Us love ugliness! Is big crime to make anything perfect on Bizarro World!”. In one episode, for example, a salesman is doing a brisk trade selling Bizarro bonds: “Guaranteed to lose money for you”. Later, the mayor appoints Bizarro No. 1 to investigate a crime, “Because you are stupider than the entire Bizarro police force put together”. This is intended and taken as a great compliment.

Our alien president, rather than being a superhero disguised as a mild-mannered something or other, out to promote truth, justice and the American Way, is instead the doppelgänger from Bizarro World.  In the American version of Bizarro World, our friends (England, Israel, etc.) are our enemies.  Our active enemies and those countries that are merely passively hostile to us (North Korea, Iran, Castro, Venezuela, etc.) are the ones to whom we pay homage.  Our cooling planet is a warming planet.  The UN, one of the most corrupt organizations in the world, is the world’s only hope for peace.  The way to cure the nation’s vast deficit is to incur more debt.  Disarmament protects us.  The only democratic nation in the Middle East is a Nazi country.  Putting women in hijabs frees them.  These are the values Bizarro World Superman/Obama has brought to us.

In other words, the world according to this alien being is a Bizarro World in which all principles, values and common sense are reversed.  And just so you know this is absolutely true, I have it on good authority that the President’s real name, his Bizarro World name, is Amabo Niessuh Kcarab.

Expiration dates, Promises, Obama, Etc.

President Barack Obama may not be able to meet his stated goal of closing the much-criticized Guantanamo Bay prison by January as his administration runs into daunting legal and logistical hurdles to moving the more than 220 detainees still there.

Senior administration officials acknowledged for the first time Friday that difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving other thorny questions mean the president’s promised January deadline may slip…

The government also must decide where inside the U.S. to move the detainees, and that highly fraught choice still has not been made, the officials said. A maximum security prison in Standish, Mich., and the military penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas are under consideration as possible locations. Whatever facility is chosen, the Pentagon will have to make improvements necessary to safely house the prisoners.

…Another front in the effort to close the prison is the problem of finding countries willing to take in those detainees deemed eligible for release. The administration so far has transferred 14 prisoners to other countries, the officials said.

Where oh where can the Democrat Underground/”WAR IS IMMORAL!!!!1111111eleventy” Crowd be?  Why aren’t they banging their spoons on their high chairs and demanding that St. Barry of the Sacred Civil Liberties shut down Club Gitmo right now? 

I mean, Obama is once again breaking a promise to his core voters-leftist thumbsuckers.  I remember hearing that the Bushitler-Cheneyburton regime and all of it’s foul works had to be reversed.  The fierce urgency of now demanded no less.

If the Gitmo facility was a crime against human rights on January 19th 2009, why isn’t it now?  Nothing has changed there.  Gitmo still holds two hundred odd foreign detainees, most of whom have not been granted a trial.  This was so monumentally important to the leftists only a few short months ago.  Now……eh, not so much.  What changed the minds of the progressives?

If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear it was because the Democrat Party’s outcry over Gitmo was just a campaign tactic against Republicans, not a deeply held moral necessity.

So because of his stellar track record of keeping promises, I’m sure Obambi will get around to closing Gitmo.  One of these days.  Eventually.  Some time.  In the near future.  Or the long run.   Soon.  Or something.

Remaking “They Live”?  Uggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I’m beginning to wonder if there is anything from the 1980s to be left alone, sacred, and enjoyed on 2 a.m. viewings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest classic to be remade is John Carpenter’s “They Live.” Negotiations are ongoing, as Universal and Strike Entertainment are still trying to acquire the rights, and no director or writers are yet on board.

This is sacrilege.  The only thing more ridiculous would be a remake of “The Fly”.  Oh, wait………………….

Reaction to Obama’s UN speech

 Once again, Doctor Zero hits a home run.

Obama can’t be the czar of czars, supreme executive of nationalized industries, and distributor of trillion-dollar “stimulus” checks, while also serving as a plausible champion of liberty. The wealth of free men cannot be “spread around” to suit a politician’s ideas of fairness, without compromising the freedom of both the providers and the recipients. Embracing freedom means allowing others to choose their own course in life, earn and spend their own money… and take responsibility for their occasional failures. Freedom is meaningless in the absence of responsibility. Children are not free.

The increasingly bitter and frustrated man who addressed the United Nations yesterday was not the leader of the free world, challenging the forces of tyranny and offering hope to the oppressed. He went there to offer pleasing words and concessions to the tyrants, so they would leave him alone, while he draws a burial shroud over the American century. No dictator will ever be moved to free his captive people by an appeal to prevent the polar ice caps from shrinking.

Exactly correct.

We’ve had a lot of time to figure out President Obama and how he deals with issues around the world.  It’s a dog’s lunch.  When he’s not continuing Bush’s policies on terror detainees, he’s giving handjobs to the most anti-democratic regimes on the planet.

This muddled jackassery says that the guy pretty much doesn’t care about how America interacts with the rest of the world.  The status quo is pretty good to Obama.  So he’ll muddle through in Iraq and Afghanistan because hey, we’re there already, so we may as well make the best of it.  Anything beyond that is gonna be a bridge too far for Barry.

I think Obama’s speech also shows just how embarrassed he is about American power.  Like any good college-prof Marxoid, Bammy doesn’t believe that the US has done much good in the world, so the focus on multilateralism and letting other countries have a veto on our actions is all good, because we just fuck things up on our own if left to our own devices.

Obama is deliberately hand cuffing America to keep us from doing anything ‘rash’ or ‘unilateral’ not just because he thinks we suck, but also because he doesn’t want to bother with the rest of the world’s problems.  Instead, he wants shit to stay quiet so he can remake America into the statist paradise of his fantasies.  If the world just keeps itself more or less stable, Barry thinks he’ll be able to ram through health care deform, cap n’ tax and everything else on the progressive wish list.

It’s depressing to realize just how naive our president is.  In fact, at some point sooner or later the world will intrude on Obambi’s happy fun-time in the domestic policy rumpus room.  Some prick-eared foreign dipshit with a hard-on for a fight will do some stupid shit.  This will force Barack to remove the steroid pump from the asscheek of American government and maybe pay attention to a real live external threat.

The only question now is:  Will Obambi have the time, will and ideology to effectively deal with the all-but-certain future crisis?

All signs point to ‘no’.

Federal authorities arrested a 19-year-old Jordanian citizen whom they said placed an inactive car bomb today at Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper in downtown Dallas.

Hosam Maher Husein Smadi has repeatedly voiced his intent to serve Osama bin Laden and al-Qa’ida and commit “violent Jihad,” authorities said in a prepared statement.

…Authorities said that Smadi was under continuous FBI surveillance. Federal agents posed as members of an al-Qa’ida sleeper cell. Smadi, who was in the U.S. illegally, allegedly told them that he came to the country specifically to commit “Jihad for the sake of God.”

According to authorities, Smadi identified potential Dallas targets in June and allegedly scoped out Fountain Place in July. Authorities said that Smadi lived and worked in Italy, about 45 miles south of Dallas.

All I can say is:  Thanks FBI.  You potentially saved thousands of American lives.  Good job.

It’s been 89 days since Manuel Zelaya was booted from power. He’s sleeping on chairs, and he claims his throat is sore from toxic gases and “Israeli mercenaries” are torturing him with high-frequency radiation…

He sought refuge at the Brazilian Embassy, where Zelaya said he is being subjected to toxic gases and radiation that alter his physical and mental state.

…Witnesses said that for a short time Tuesday morning, soldiers used a device that looked like a large satellite dish to emit a loud shrill noise.

The man we’ve decided to support in Honduras is hitting all the high notes of fever-swamp bullshit.  Israeli conspiracies, killer radiation, secret sonic weaponry-my God, Lyndon LaRouche was right. [sarc/]

IRS: “Ummm ACORN, you’ve got cooties”

The Internal Revenue Service has severed ties with ACORN, saying it “would no longer include ACORN in its volunteer tax assistance program” that offered “free tax advice to about 3 million low- and moderate-income tax filers” this past spring.

What is amazing is just how long it took for the tax-dudes to figure out that they had to roll ACORN under the bus.

The new FCC Chairman is a bit grabby

Elections have consequences.  Look at what the Obama coat-tails have dragged in.  Meet Julius Genachowski, the new head of the FCC.

“Today,” he said, “we can’t imagine what our lives would be like without the Internet—any more than we can imagine life without running water or the light bulb.” On this point, nearly everyone can agree.

Unfortunately, Genachowski drew exactly the wrong lessons from his initial insight: Rather than see the Internet’s growth and integration into everyday life as evidence that government intervention isn’t necessary, the Web’s chief regulator took the opposite view—that the Net’s size and scope make government meddling a necessity. The Internet, in other words, is Too Connected to Fail.

The theme of the speech was openness, but for Genachowski, an “open Internet” seems to mean a “government-monitored Internet.” Innovators and entrepreneurs may have been responsible for making the Web great, but care, oversight, and access are now up to the government. “Congress and the President have charged the FCC with developing a National Broadband Plan to ensure that every American has access to open and robust broadband,” he said.

In other words, Genachowski’s starting point is that it is the job of the FCC job to provide access, not the market…

…Genachowski talks a good game on Internet freedom and innovation, but then positions the FCC as a sort of Internet enforcer. “In the words of Tim Berners-Lee,” he said, “the Internet is a ‘blank canvas’—allowing anyone to contribute and to innovate without permission.” That’s how it should be. But the crucial question is permission from whom? Genachowski seems oblivious to the fact that that the regulatory regime he is promoting would implicitly require innovators to get permission for their innovations from his agency. In his words, “the FCC must be a smart cop on the beat preserving a free and open Internet.”

A better analogy, however, would be to a judge and jury.

…Clearly defined regulations are probably unnecessary, but at least they would provide innovators a sense of stability. But Genachowski’s case-specific approach to judging violations—essentially we’ll know it when we see it—doesn’t even give them that. Now, whenever a telecom company wants to implement a new service or product that works by manipulating traffic flow on the Web, it will have to worry about whether or not its innovation might set off Genochowski’s sense of… well, whatever it is that he and the rest of the regulators at the FCC don’t like.

Lets pick some of this apart.

First, a national broadband plan.  This sounds like the FCC’s slightly less ambitious version of BarryCare-”The public (highspeed internet) option would bring choice and competition to the broadband market.”  Nobody except the Obamaroids like the idea of a public option when it comes to health care, so I can’t imagine the public jumping on the government-run internetz bandwagon.

The other goofy part is that, once again, an Obambi directive calls for the government to both officiate the game and participate in it at the same time.  The FCC is going to be a broad-band provider and tell other participants in the internet market how to run their business.  It’s sorta like expecting the ref in a football game to play quarterback for one side, yet still be fair enough to call penalties on both teams equitably.

The only people who want a system like this are sub-morons with no grasp of economics or power-hungry pencil pushers.  My guess is that in the case of Julius Genachowski, it’s probably equal measures of column dumb and column ambitious.

To hear world leaders and others addressing the United Nations Summit on Climate Change, the threat could not be more real and the need more urgent to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

But in stark contrast to the earnest statements is the carbon footprint associated with their gathering.

It happens every autumn: midtown Manhattan becomes the motorcade capital of the world. Each foreign leader in town has a convoy of vehicles. Some of them, like President Obama’s motorcade, are 20-to-30 vehicles in length. It’s so long – it seems that when the front of it reaches the U.N., the back end is still back at his hotel.

Exacerbating the annual exercise in diplomatic gridlock are police actions, blocking intersections and closing streets for security to facilitate motorcade movements. It renders countless other vehicles immobile while waiting for motorcades to pass, their engines idling but still blowing exhaust into the midtown air

Does it undermine the goal of the climate change summit and cause the pledges of environmental concern to ring hollow?

Asked about it, White House climate change negotiator Todd Sterns had a suggestion.

“I think the U.N. should make a pledge to electric vehicle motorcades within five years,” he said.

Right. As soon as all U.N. diplomats pay their parking tickets.

Global warming is a misguided article of faith created by the believers of the Church of the Anthropogenic Climate Change.  To be honest, I don’t care how long these world leader motorcades are and I really don’t care how long they sit burning gasoline.  In fact, the longer President Obama sits in his 8 mile per gallon SUV, the less time he has to muck things up in America governmental affairs.

What is annoying is how St. Barry of the Sacred Lowering of Ocean Levels and the rest of the cockholster climate change believers feel the need to lecture the rest of us about our bad habits.  A first class tit like Steven Chu thinks it’s cool to call Americans ‘teenagers’ because we don’t snap to attention, drop everything and do what he says.  Representatives to the UN, many of them coming from countries that can’t clean up a milk-spill without a zillion dollar OxFam grant, routinely hector America about it’s wasteful use of natural resources, ugly forest depletion, rampant CO2 emissions, being mean to chipmunks, blah, blah, freakin’ blah.

Naturally, these clowns would strive to live in a carbon-neutral manner, right?  Nah.  Nope.  Nein.  No.  Not a chance.

Plaxico Burress: Toast

Predictable.

Facing the prospect of spending at least 3 1/2 years behind bars, one-time Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress on Thursday accepted a plea bargain with a two-year prison sentence for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub.

The former New York Giants wide receiver pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he had faced. He will be sentenced Sept. 22, and lawyer Benjamin Brafman said he expects Burress to begin serving his sentence immediately after.

Burress’ guilty plea ends months of haggling between Brafman and the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The case went to a grand jury after negotiations broke down, apparently because District Attorney Robert Morgenthau was insisting that Burress serve at least two years in prison.
