Bad News-The DREAM has died

Posted by KingShamus on December 18, 2010

Awwwwww.

The weeks of rallies, hunger strikes and sit-ins and the thousands of phone calls placed to Senate offices didn’t pay off for immigration activists.

The decade-old DREAM Act once again failed to break a filibuster in the Senate on Saturday morning, effectively killing the bill this year and shutting the door on what perhaps was the last chance for pro-immigration reform legislation until at least the 2012 election.

Darn it.

I was so looking forward to oodles more illegals pouring through our seive-like immigration system.  Oh whatever shall we do? [sarc/]

The DREAM act is a basically amnesty by another moniker.  This amnesty deform monstrosity would just encourage more illegals to make a run for the border.  Only in the blinkered ideological universe of Harry Reid and Co. does an amnesty program make sense.  Back on planet Earth, amnesty and it’s unintended–but very real and very painful–consequences would mean still more downward pressure on US wages (amongst many other bad things).  The Democrats: contributed to an economic meltdown in the aughts and still shitting on American workers today.

Senate Democrats came up five votes short of the 60 needed to advance the House-passed bill, which would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the country as children if they attend college or join the military for two years.

The 55-41 vote was mostly along party lines, though a handful of Democrats — perhaps fearful of their 2012 election outlook — also voted against the DREAM Act.

That’s absolutely critical.  A scared Democrat is a great kind of Democrat.  Even better than that is a Donkey-Puncher fearful of losing his job while also being from a red (or reddish) state.  Claire McCaskill,  Jon Tester, Ben Nelson, Kent Conrad and Sherrod Brown are all up for re-election in two years.  These five stealth statist, these ‘fake right, legislate left’ blowhards must be made to fear for their electoral lives.  It’s the only way we can make sure they vote even sorta right the next few years.

Imagine if these clowns actually represented the voters of their states.  Getting real spending cuts would be a possibility.  Overriding President Barry’s veto could happen.  We’d have a definite shot at repealing ObamaCare. How the DREAM Act got cut down gives us a template for how to do a lot of things for the next two years.  If conservatives are vigilant, we can keep the Democrats on their toes.

I snagged the Politico link from Memeorandum.

Update:  The rad Libertarian Republican points this out:

Note – 3 Republicans sided with CAIR – Murkowski, Lugar, and Voinivich.

Yes, our good friends at CAIR were all for the DREAM Act.  They’re such great patriots too.  CAIR endorsing DREAM is as reassuring as having Ayman Al-Zawahiri organize an interfaith tour bus in Tel Aviv.

Also, you gotta love these three dorks voting for the DREAM Act.  We’ve got a spoiled brat, an unreliable softie and a needle-dick RINO all voting to open up the floodgates.  Great job.  I’d say Dick Lugar has more than earned his stupid ass a bruisng career-ending primary challenge in 2012.  To hell with him.

Update II:  The great Instapundit points out something Mickey Kaus said.

The Tea Parties did it [Killed the DREAM Act]. Not only had they threatened establishment Republicans with primary opposition, but they had actually beaten one … two … three of them. Nothing like fresh heads on pikes to, er, reinforce a persuasive (to my mind) policy argument. Score one for losing Delaware Tea Partier Christine O’Donnell, who knocked off establishment pick Rep. Mike Castle (who voted for DREAM) in the GOP primary. Even score one for Alaskan Joe Miller. He probably alienated Republican Lisa Murkowski by beating her in the primary, and ultimately she won reelection anyway as a write-in. But that’s just one lost Senate vote. By my count, Miller’s primary coup may have helped gain around ten votes by terrifying GOP incumbents who might otherwise have been tempted by the prospect of a feel-good, bipartisan, MSM-approved pro-DREAM stand.

Which is exactly why we have to primary any and every wobbly Republican.

By the way, Mickey Kaus is the only reason to ever read Newsweek.  Not Fareeeeeeeeeeeed Zakaria.  Not Howard Fineman.  Certainly not Jonathan Alter.  Eleanor Clift?  Please.

What a useless rag of dickless DC conventional wisdom Newsweek is.

Sorry.  I just had to say it.
